In 1881, with the Treaty of Berlin, Eastern Rumelia was declared an autonomous region, but on September 6, 1886, Bulgaria unilaterally annexed it. This marked the beginning of the evacuation of the area by the Greek population, which peaked in 1906. The Greek state, with Law G.S.B’ on April 7, 1907, “On the Establishment and Distribution of Land in Thessaly,” created the legal framework for the resettlement of the inhabitants and the regulation of the agrarian issue.
The inhabitants of the area came from the towns of Pyrgos, Varna, Sozopol, Efstathiokhori, Kavarna, Messemvria, Valtsiki, and Aspro. From five national estates and two large farms, a total of seven estates covering an area of 23,000 square kilometers were gathered for distribution. These estates provided only small plots, forcing many to leave the area, mainly for the large urban centers.
After the Asia Minor Catastrophe, refugees from Asia Minor also arrived in Evxinoupoli. Estates and plots were granted to them by those who had left. The settlement was formed through two different waves of arrivals. Much later, there was also colonization by locals from the surrounding region, mainly from livestock farmers of Othrys.

Evxinoupoli is a Municipal Community of the new Municipality of Almyros and is the largest after Almyros itself. A town of approximately 2,600 inhabitants, its foundation was completed in 1907. Its first residents, as mentioned above, were refugees originating from Eastern Rumelia. Later, in 1924, refugees from Asia Minor and Pontus settled there, followed by Vlachs, Sarakatsani, and inhabitants from nearby mountainous villages.
A main feature of Evxinoupoli is its excellent town planning, with wide, straight streets and corresponding sidewalks. Its most notable buildings are the magnificent Church of the Dormition of the Theotokos and the Primary School, whose old wing has been designated as a preserved building and will be renovated. There is also a new modern Gymnasium with an internal amphitheater, a two-classroom Kindergarten, and a Nursery. In the central square stand the Cultural Center and a beautiful fountain. Additionally, through private initiative, a 5×5 football field has been created, while the football team “DIMITRA” consists of skilled players.
It is supplied with water from a spring on Mount Othrys, from which high-quality water is transported to five built stone fountains located at various points in the town. The town has numerous shops, cafés, and taverns. At a distance of 500 meters lies the “Kouri” forest, along the route from Almyros to Evxinoupoli. Additionally, to the south and nearby is the Xirias River, and further south is Mount Othrys. The main occupation of the residents is agriculture, followed by livestock farming.
