Pteleos

On the southern side of the Pagasitikos Gulf, just 35 kilometers from Nea Anchialos airport, opposite the Sporades islands, lies Pteleos. The area is ideal for holidays year-round, especially in summer when there is heavy tourist activity. A group of settlements and beautiful beaches surround the main area, creating a community that combines the charm of untouched nature with all modern amenities—shops, hotels, bars, discos, restaurants, etc. Pigadi is a summer hub, with its picturesque port, taverns serving fresh fish and many appetizers, as well as nightlife.

In Pteleos, there are many historical monuments and attractions, such as parts of Mycenaean tombs, the Venetian castle in Pigadi with its spectacular view, and the Leichoura wetland—just a few of the most interesting sights. To the west, the Othrys mountain range dominates, offering beautiful trails and recently explored caves.

Besides the historical monuments, there are numerous churches and chapels which, due to their location or significance, also make for interesting destinations for any visitor. The picturesque chapel of Saint George, built on a hill, is worth a visit, as from there one can admire the Pagasitikos Gulf and the entire Pelion mountain range both day and night.

The sandy beaches at Agia Marina, Lefki, Lichoura, Loutro, Pachia Ammos, Draka, Mitrouna, Kotsikia, Briniotissa, Rodia, Panagia, etc., are among the most beautiful and clean beaches in southwestern Magnesia. Some of these beaches are easily accessible, with modern facilities and full services, while others are more remote and secluded, offering opportunities for romantic escapes to their pristine shores with turquoise waters.

After a full day at the beaches, you can relax, rejuvenate, and have fun at the many taverns, enjoying fresh fish for which Pteleos—especially its beach, Pigadi—is famous, or at the numerous cafés, sipping your coffee or cocktail. The beaches and coasts of Pteleos have been honored multiple times with the “Golden Star” and “Blue Flag” awards for their cleanliness and beautiful natural sandy shores.

The area is also of great interest to nature lovers and hunters, as it boasts rich natural beauty and a large number of game animals throughout the year.

The Municipal Unit of Pteleos is the first impression of Magnesia Prefecture when coming from Athens and the last best memory when leaving it. The Local Community of Pteleos, with 1,400 inhabitants, now belongs to the Municipality of Almyros, according to the new Kallikratis law.
