Vrynaina

Vrynaina is located in the Othrys mountain range, also known as the Mountain of the Titans. After the Titanomachy, Zeus assigned the nymph Othryida (Othreida) to tend his herds of oxen on this mountain, which is how the mountain got its name from the nymph.

Vrynaina is known for its exceptionally high-quality aromatic herbs (mountain tea, oregano, mint, sage, lemon balm, spearmint, rosemary, lavender, parsley, dill, verbena, bay, linden) and the honey it produces. Vrynaina’s uniqueness lies in the fact that it produces more than 80% of Greece’s total mountain tea. Its taverns are famous throughout the region for their appetizers and locally produced meats.

Particular mention should be made of the two monasteries in the area: the female Holy Monastery of Kato Xenia and the male Holy Monastery of Ano Xenia, featuring exceptional frescoes and the miraculous icon of Panagia Xenia. The monasteries date back to the 11th century AD and have churches of outstanding architecture as well as accommodation facilities capable of hosting many pilgrims. At the Kato Holy Monastery of Xenia, the Deposition of Christ is reenacted every year on Good Friday on Golgotha Hill, while the monastery’s feast on August 23 attracts a large number of worshippers.

In the wider area of Vrynaina, there are also stone bridges and underground caves, the best known of which are the “Nerospilia” and the “Tetrastomo.”

The village is a Local Community of the Municipality of Almyros and has approximately 400 inhabitants. It is located about 22 kilometers from the municipal center.
