The settlement of Gavriani was built in its current location in 1950 under the Marshall Plan. The area belonged to the Thessaly general Apostolidis. When Thessaly was liberated, twelve estates and a mine at the site “Tsangli” came under his ownership. The Gavriani area was one of these twelve estates, which was later leased by the Governor of the Bank of Greece, Drosopoulos, for ninety-nine years.
The first populations to settle in Gavriani were nomadic Sarakatsani. When the law on expropriations began to be discussed in 1947, these Sarakatsani requested to purchase the area. After various challenges and legal procedures, it eventually came into their possession. In the large forested area with abundant running water, the descendants of the first settlers now live, engaging in livestock farming and agricultural cultivation.
Gavriani is a settlement of Pteleos and had 217 inhabitants in the 2001 census.
