Amaliapoli

Amaliapoli (Mitzela) is a seaside tourist resort that attracts a large number of visitors. It features organized beaches of stunning beauty, hotels and rooms for rent, picturesque fish taverns and ouzeri by the sea, bars, and more. During the summer months, small boats offer day cruises to the Northern Sporades (Skiathos, Skopelos, Alonissos).

The (new) Mitzela was built in the early 19th century by inhabitants of Old Mitzela in Pelion. It has a unique history, as its inhabitants were distinguished for their heroism in naval battles during the liberation from the Turks. Parts of the armament of their ships (cannons, etc.) are displayed in the square of Amaliapoli.

Its name was given in honor of Queen Amalia, who invited Bavarian architects to oversee the architecture of the settlement and its buildings. Even today, buildings of high architectural value, as well as the castle of Mitzela, are preserved. In the picturesque bay dominates the islet “Kikynthos,” while in the wider marine area from Amaliapoli to Nies, 12 shipwrecks from the late Roman and Byzantine periods have been identified.

Tourists can enjoy swimming at enchanting beaches, ouzo and seafood appetizers by the sea, participate in summer sports activities (beach volleyball) and water sports, and have drinks and party until the early hours at seaside bars. Additionally, they can take a day cruise to the Northern Sporades.

It is located just 8 kilometers from the National Road (exit at the Sourpi junction). Today, it is a Local Community of the Kallikratis Municipality of Almyros.
