Drymonas

Drymonas is a Local Community of the Municipality of Almyros, with 300 inhabitants. It is located near the National Road, at the foot of Mount Othrys, at an altitude of 150 m.

The name Drymonas comes from the many dense trees that once covered the area. The entire region of the village was a forest mainly of kermes oaks, which grew unusually large, unlike in other semi-mountainous areas.

The village was built about three kilometers above a Byzantine settlement. The site of the former Byzantine settlement is now called Palaio Drymonas, and the ruins suggest that it was large. The first inhabitants of the village came from nearby villages such as Sourpi, Vrynaina, and Kokkotous. Additionally, a few families came from Anavra to escape bandits, who at the time when Drymonas was being built had overrun the Anavra area.

The first inhabitants of the village, who had come from Sourpi after 1832, settled in Drymonas and founded New Drymonas on the slope opposite Sourpi. After the delineation of the Greek-Turkish borders, a ravine just outside the village marked the boundary between the Greek and Turkish sectors. Drymonas was in the Turkish sector, and during the 1897 revolution, the inhabitants left the village to avoid potential troubles and moved into Greek territory.

There are two notable churches in Drymonas. In the village square is the Church of Panagia, while on the hill above the village stands the picturesque Church of Agios Athanasios.
