The town of Almyros is a modern town, built in the center of a fertile plain known as the “Krokio Field,” which is crossed by streams. It has a population of 7,566 inhabitants, according to the 2001 census. It is located 32.5 km southwest of Volos, where there is a commercial port. The town is situated near the Athens–Thessaloniki National Highway, making it easily accessible to visitors. In addition, just a few kilometers from the town lies the civil airport of Nea Anchialos.
Almyros is an important agricultural and commercial center of the Magnesia Prefecture, while it is also developing into an agritourism hub for the area. It is only natural that Almyros hosts the oldest agricultural cooperative in Greece, since in its fertile plain cereals, vegetables, cotton, corn, olives, almond trees, vineyards, and more are cultivated.
A neighboring town of Almyros is Evxinoupoli, which has 2,501 inhabitants. It should be noted that both Almyros and Evxinoupoli, as well as Platanos, have their own beaches on the Gulf of Almyros. In fact, the southwestern side of Magnesia, which is entirely comprised of the Municipality of Almyros, is dotted with beautiful beaches.
In the wider area, there are two other large towns, Sourpi (2,008 inhabitants) and Pteleos (1,326 inhabitants). However, there are also many villages and settlements within the Municipality, so more details about the towns, villages, settlements, and beaches of the region can be found on the page with Demographic and Statistical data.
At the Archaeological Museum of Almyros, you can see rich findings from the Neolithic period, while directly opposite you can visit the old Gymnasium of Almyros, a monumental neoclassical building from the early 20th century, which, together with the Museum, are the oldest buildings in the area. Just outside the town lies the Kouri Forest, an area of 1,200 acres, an ideal place for walking, full of oak trees, with a traditional little train, beautiful artificial lakes, and animals that roam freely. The lush green Othrys mountain, which stands imposingly above the entire Municipality, is suitable for hiking and hunting enthusiasts, and it is an ideal destination for nature-loving visitors.
The Municipality of Almyros consists of the Municipal Unit of Almyros, the Municipal Unit of Sourpi, the Municipal Unit of Pteleos, and the Municipal Unit of Anavra.
