During the 16th–17th century, many Vlach communities were organized, such as Metsovo, Kalarrytes, Zagori, Moschopolis (near present-day Korçë), and others, with a total population of about 60,000 inhabitants. With the dissolution of the Ottoman Empire and the rise of nation-states, the development of the Vlach centers came to an end.
The Vlachs of Almyros originate from the village of Frasari (modern-day Frashtan in southern Albania). Around 1700, it was a significant town in the region of Premeti, with approximately 600 houses. It was later destroyed three times by the Ottomans, and many of its inhabitants fled to the Korçë region. From there, the vast majority moved to Almyros during the last quarter of the 19th century. Between 1878 and 1880, 163 Vlach families settled in Almyros, although settlements had occurred both before that time and after 1881, when Almyros—and all of Thessaly—was liberated.
The Vlachs, apart from settling in the town of Almyros, also settled in the surrounding area, mainly in the villages of Neraida and Anthotopos. Today, Neraida has approximately 120 inhabitants.
