Achilleio Sea Museum
The Sea Museum in Achilleio was established in 2002 to present to students, educators, and visitors the value, beauty, and diversity of the marine world and, through knowledge, to contribute to the protection of the natural environment.

The Museum’s display cases feature collections of seashells from the local marine area as well as from seas around the world. Marine organisms such as crabs, sea urchins, corals, and others are also exhibited.

Through texts, drawings, and photographs, visitors can learn about their biology, anatomy, and ecology. In a separate display case, visitors can learn about the relationship between seashells and humans from antiquity to the present. At the same time, information is provided on the geological development of the area.

Of special interest to both young and adult visitors is the dedicated section on sponge diving. The collection includes photographs, sponges, and sponge-diving tools such as the kangkava and skandalopetra, as well as complete diving equipment with a diving suit, helmet, copper breastplate, shoes, weights, air pump, hose, guide rope, air supply machine, compass, and more, revealing to visitors the evolution of sponge diving in Greece and around the world.

The Museum helps raise students’ awareness and serves as a suitable space for environmental education outside the school. Thus, the site is ideal for organized trips and guided tours for school groups with environmental interests.
