Almyros Archaeological Museum

A few years after the liberation of Almyros and its incorporation into Greece, a group of Almyros residents, led by Nikolaos Giannopoulos, founded the Philarchaeological Society of Almyros. One of the Society’s projects was the Almyros Museum, which began operating in 1930.

Over time, the museum building suffered multiple damages, and twice it was brought before the Central Archaeological Council (KAS) with a proposal for its demolition.

Finally, in August 1986, with a unanimous decision by the members of the Central Council for Modern Monuments, it was designated a “Work of Art,” repaired from the damages of the 1981 earthquake, and reopened for operation.

The museum’s halls display finds from the wider area of Southwestern Magnesia, covering a time span beginning with the Early Neolithic period. One of its rooms also houses the renowned library of the Philarchaeological Society.
